Year 200 in 2025 - BIS Lecture Series featuring local Irish Historian Dr. John Flood

As part of the 200-Year Anniversary celbration of the Benevolent Irish Society in 2025, the Society is proud to feature at the Irish Hall a very select group of local and international speakers on Irish subjects. There are 8 lectures in total in the period of August 1 - August 16 and the range of topics is expected to be thoroughly thought provoking. The lectures are free but we are asking for sign-up so that we can predict refreshment numbers. THE MUSIC OF PLACE: FROM KITCHEN HEARTH TO CEILI HALL … WHAT THE MUSICIANS SAY This project aims to explore the relationship between traditional Irish music and its performance in Ireland versus Prince Edward Island. By interviewing musicians who have performed at the Benevolent Irish Society Hall, the focus will be on examining the similarities and differences in how traditional tunes are played and received in these two distinct locations. Key questions include: Is there a universal aspect to the music across these geographic areas, or are there noticeable differences? How does the performance and reception of traditional music evolve from the Irish kitchen hearth to the Island ceili hall? Does the music serve as a bridge between Irish musicians and Island audiences?
