About the event

The Winter Lecture Series at the Irish Hall, 582 North River Road, Charlottetown, proudly presents a compelling lecture by Mi’kmaq Community Leader, Julie Pellissier-Lush. Join us on Monday, January 29, 2024, at 7 pm, for an insightful journey into the experiences of seven generations within Julie's family.

Julie Pellissier-Lush, an accomplished actress and bestselling author of My Mi’kmaq Mother, has left an indelible mark. As a former Poet Laureate for PEI and a recipient of numerous accolades, including the Queen’s Jubilee medal and the Meritorious Service Medal, Julie brings a wealth of experience.

Born in Summerside, Julie's academic pursuits led her to the University of Winnipeg in 2000, where she graduated with distinction, holding a double major in Psychology and Human Resources. Returning to Prince Edward Island, she served as the Managing Editor at the Mi’kmaq Confederacy for five years.

In 2011, Julie pioneered the award-winning theatre group, Mi’kmaq Legends, blending storytelling, music, and dance to breathe life into authentic Mi’kmaq lore. Beyond her creative endeavors, Julie has been a stalwart representative on committees addressing Indigenous issues and rights. Her tenure as vice president of the Aboriginal Women’s Association spanned four terms.

In 2019, Julie made history as Prince Edward Island’s first Mi’kmaq Poet Laureate since the title's inception in 2002. Her latest literary offering, "Epekwitk: Mi’kmaq Poetry from Prince Edward Island," a collection of poignant poetry, was released on November 24, 2021. Join us for an evening of enlightenment as Julie unfolds the unique narrative of seven remarkable generations.
